work with scissors. All other work must be done using Snap-on Combs. Time limit
1 hour.
SALON FREESTYLE: Open to any contestant, Dogs under 16 inches 1 hour 30 min.
16-20 inches 1 hour 45 min. over 20 inches 2 hour time limit
JUDGES may give a warning to any competitor who is seen handling a dog in a
rough manner. A second warning will constitute disqualification. Clipper burns,
nicks or cuts will be severely penalized. The judges will choose first, second
and third place in each class. A judge may also present an “Award of Merit” to
one or more competitors in a class who, while not given a class placement,
demonstrate excellence in grooming. The Judges decision will be final.
All styles of grooming are permitted: clipping, scissoring, straight scissor,
thinning scissors, hand-stripping, plucking and carding . Any trim is permitted
for Poodles, including all the acceptable show styles.
ALL DOGS MUST BE LEASHED OR IN CAGES WHEN NOT ON GROOMING TABLES
DURING THE CONTEST.
CONTESTANTS late for any class will be allowed to compete if they believe
they can finish their dogs in the remaining time. No extra time will be
allotted and unfinished dogs will not be judged at the end of the time period.
A GROOMING TABLE OR TROLLY must be provided by each contestant. A few tables
could be made available for contestants travelling by air. ALL EQUIPMENT must
be furnished by contestants. Some extra power cords and multi boxes will be
available but bring your own if you have them. Time will be given after
grooming to clean around your work area.
ALL DOGS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF SIX WEEKS GROWTH OF HAIR. Poodles should have
at least 1 inch or 2.5cm of hair and preferably no visible pattern. While a
minimum of six weeks growth is required, the show management recognizes that
some coats grow more quickly than others. Adequate coat, therefore, will be
defined as follows: The coat must be sufficient to allow the groomer to make a
distinct change in the dogs’ appearance. They should be freshly shampooed,
dried and brushed, with nails clipped, ears cleaned, FREE OF KNOTS. As a rule
Terriers that are being hand-stripped are not freshly bathed, since shampooing
softens the hair and causes it to blow. Chalk may be used as a cleaning agent
provided all traces of it are removed before judging. Genital area and stomach
may be clipped (for sanitary reasons) prior to the competition, underneath feet
may also be clipped. All other clipping, scissoring and thinning shall be done
in the ring only. Contestants may “freshen up” their dogs after class judging,
before they return for final judging but no addition clipping, scissoring or
coat shaping in any form is permitted.
COMPETITORS should have their dogs ready for the judges “pre inspection’ 30
minutes before their class begins. The judges will examine the dogs prior to
the start of the various classes to determine overall cleanliness and the
general condition of the coat. At this time dogs with insufficient coat growth,
dogs with parasites, or dogs that have been excessively pre-trimmed may be
dismissed. When the allotted class times are up, the judges will examine the
dogs and comb through the coat, taking the following into consideration when
making their decisions.
POODLES:
1. The suitability of the trim to the dogs’ conformation and breed profile.
2. The quality of the clipper work:
A. Whether the pattern is placed correctly and evenly, and clipped with the
appropriate blade, the clipped lines are definite and straight, and neatly
beveled where they meet the body coat.
B. If there is no pattern and the body is clipped overall, whether the
groomer has used a blade complimentary to the coat.
C. Whether the feet, face and tail are clipped with the appropriate blade.
Whether the clipped lines on the face are straight and the clipper work is
smooth with no tufts of hair around the lips and the eye corners. Whether the
feet are clipped clean between the toes and under the pads.
3. The quality, uniformity and smoothness of the scissoring.
A. Whether the finish is like that of plush velvet, free of marks from
scissors.
B. Whether the legs are scissored evenly and are of sufficient fullness to
balance the dog.
C. Whether the topknot and tail are properly shaped and in balance to each
other.
4. The degree of difficulty of the clip. This does not mean that fancy
patterns should take precedence. Overall scissor trims can be as difficult with
certain coat textures.
5. The dogs’ overall finished appearance with emphasis on balance, symmetry
and smoothness of finish. The trim should hold together when the comb is passed
through the coat.
TERRIERS, SPANIELS AND OTHER SPORTING BREEDS AND ALL OTHER PUREBREEDS:
1. The suitability of the trim and how it conforms to the accepted breed
standard and profile.
2. The quality of the clipper work; whether the clipped areas have been
clipped with the appropriate blade, whether they are neat and smooth, and any
clipped lines are straight.
3. The quality, uniformity and smoothness of the scissoring and/or thinning
A. On scissored breeds, whether the finish is plush and free from scissor
marks, and whether the legs are scissored evenly and of sufficient fullness to
balance the dog. Whether the head is properly trimmed and balanced.
B. In breeds with eyebrows or falls and beards, whether the trimming is
correct and points up the distinctive features which characterize the breed.
C. On breeds with furnishings or feathering, whether they blend smoothly
rather than stick out.
D. On Spaniels and other sporting breeds, backs can be clipped or carded and
thinned.
4. The dogs overall appearance with emphasis on balance, symmetry and
smoothness of finish.
HAND STRIPPED BREEDS:
1. The suitability of the trim to the accepted breed standard and profile.
2. Whether the body coat has been neatly stripped with appropriate tool or
finger and thumb, whether there are visible pink or bald patches afterwards
(this is undesirable). The hair must always be removed with the lay of the coat
and without pain. In certain cases, removing the undercoat by carding tool is
permissible. Rotated coats on hand stripped dogs are acceptable, however the
work done in the ring must be sufficient to allow the groomer to make a
distinct change in the dogs’ appearance.
3. If clippers are used to trim the soft coat on the head and ears, the front
of the neck, or on the insides of the back legs, whether these areas are
trimmed neatly and smoothly with the appropriate blade, and the clipper work is
smooth.
4. If scissors or thinning shears are used to trim the furnishings, the
quality of the work is assessed.
5. The dogs overall finished appearance with emphasis on balance, symmetry,
smoothness of finish and preservation of the distinctive features that
characterize the breed. Whether the dog has a smart and definite outline with
furnishings blending in to look natural.
MIXED BREEDS:
1. The originality and execution of the clip and its suitability to the dog’s
conformation.
2. If clippers are used, the quality of the work and whether the clipped
areas look neat and smooth.
3. If scissors or thinning shears are used, the quality, uniformity and
smoothness of the work.
4. The dogs overall finished appearance with emphasis on balance, symmetry
and smoothness of finish.
SNAP ON COMB CLASS: Open competition to any Groomer. Special rules apply. No
dog in this class may have any work done on it other than 10 minutes finishing
work with scissors. All other work must be done using Snap-on Combs.
SPECIAL NOTE – NEW RULES
SALON FREESTYLE CLASS: – to create any dog to NOT look like its original
breed or to make a mixed breed look like a pure breed.
1. The originality and execution of the clip and its suitability to the dogs
conformation.
2. If scissors or thinning shears are used, the quality, uniformity and
smoothness of the work.
3. The dogs overall finished appearance with emphasis on its altered
appearance, its balance, symmetry and finishing work.
